Ubuntu is in South African a word about ethic that specifically states that human beings cannot live in isolation and need to be interconnected with others. In other words, we cannot be truly human on our own.
A rough translation of the principle of Ubuntu is "humanity towards others". Another translation could be: "the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity".
- "A person with ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed."
(Archbishop Desmond Tutu)
The Art project concept is as follows: Each artist who wants to participate receives a disk-shaped section of round timber. With this section, they then make a piece of art inspired by the African concept of 'Ubuntu', which translates more-or-less as 'I am what I am because of who we all are', and which is often referred to by Nelson Mandela.
At the event, the various individual pieces are added one at a time, like a molecule, to create a combined work of art. The challenge for the artists, as well as for the public, is to communicate and interact with each other in such a way that individual achievement contributes harmoniously towards a common goal.
Linkart created the first Ubuntu Sculpture in Paducah, Kentucky, in July 2010.
